Palak Paneer

Palak (spinach) paneer is a very popular Indian delicacy with its origin in the northern part of India but liked and savored all over India. Palak paneer is a standard item in almost all the Indian restaurants. It is popular due to its taste and its health benefits.


It is a curry prepared with Indian cottage cheese, pureed spinach, tomatoes, onion and spices.

Spinach is the one of the main ingredients in this dish.  It is packed with nutrients and antioxidants and is a good source of Iron, calcium, vitamins, minerals and folic acid. It is good for eyes, heart, bones and hairs.


Paneer or Indian cottage cheese is unsalted, fresh cheese made from cow's milk. It is made by curdling the milk with lemon juice. Paneer is soft, un-aged cheese and does not melt.

It is rich in protein, calcium, fiber and minerals. It is a  good protein option for vegetarians and aid in weight loss. Paneer is used in many Indian dishes.

Onion, and garlic are loaded with antioxidants, and have antibacterial properties. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, vitamins, potassium and minerals.


Indian spices : Turmeric powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder have anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti fungal properties. They also enhance the taste, flavor, and color of the food. The spices added also aid in digestion.

Is palak paneer and saag paneer the same?.   As the name suggests palak paneer is made with only palak (spinach).  Saag paneer made with a combination of spinach, mustard leaves, fenugreek leaves or any other leaves.

Palak paneer goes well with chapathi, naan, pulka, jeera rice, rice and pulav.

Ingredients

  1. Spinach (Palak) - 4 - 5 cups
  2. Onion - 1
  3. Tomatoes -2
  4. Green chilli - 1 or 2 (Optional)
  5. Ginger - 2 inches
  6. Garlic - 2-3
  7. Indian cottage cheese/ paneer - 2 cups
  8. Ghee or oil - 1Tbsp.
  9. Cumin seeds - 1 tsp.
  10. Salt - 1 tsp.
  11. Brown sugar - 1tsp. (optional)
  12. Almond powder - 2 Tbsp.
  13. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp.
  14. Coriander powder - 1 tsp.
  15. Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 tsp.
  16. Garam masala Powder - 3/4 tsp.
  17. water 1 to 1 1/2 cup
  18. Kasuri methi (Dried fenugreek leaves) 1 tsp.

Instructions

  1. Place the pan on the cooking range and switch it on.
  2. Add chopped green chilies, ginger and garlic.
  3. Add spinach and 1/2 cup water.
  4. Allow the spinach to cook.
  5. Turn off the stove.
  6. Allow it cool for some time.
  7. Add the cooled spinach to the blender.
  8. Blend the spinach for 3 to 5 minutes into a fine paste and keep it aside.
  9. Heat the pan, add oil or ghee (clarified butter).
  10. Add cumin seeds and heat it until it changes color.
  11. Add chopped onions and mix.
  12. Cook till it changes color.
  13. Add chopped tomatoes and mix.
  14. Add salt and brown sugar (jaggery).
  15. Add coriander powder, red chilli powder and mix.
  16. Add blended spinach puree.
  17. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water to the blender.
  18. Add the water to the pan and mix thoroughly.
  19. Allow the mixture to cook for some time.
  20. Add almond powder and mix.
  21. Add garam masala powder and mix.
  22. Add cubed paneer and mix well.
  23. Add kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves.) and mix thoroughly.

Palak paneer is now ready to serve.

Palak paneer goes well with naan, roti, rice, jeera rice and pulav.
