Sona Masoori Rice

Sona masoori rice is a popular variety of rice in South India. Among the many different varieties of rice, the commonly used types are basmati, sona masoori, red matta (also known as Kerala kothari rice), idli rice, and ponni rice. Sona masoori is a short grained rice which is low in starch and with a distinct taste.

Sona masoori rice is half boiled rice and hence it is easier to cook and not sticky. In South India, this variety of rice is used  to prepare bisibele bath, pongal, tomato rice, biriyani, pulao, fried rice. Plain cooked sona masoori rice is consumed with rasam, sambar and many other curries.


Sona masoori rice is semi polished and hence more nutiritious. It is easy to digest and good for weight loss.

It is available in all the Indian grocery stores.

Ingredients:

  1. Sona Masoori rice - 1 cup
  2. Water - 2 cups

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly 3 to 4 times till water runs clear.
  2. Add washed Sona Masoori to inner pot of Instant Pot
  3. Add 2 cups of water and close the lid.
  4. Select (press) the 'Pressure cook' mode or 'Manual Mode' (depending on your IP Model), High Pressure Setting.
  5. Set the time to 8 minutes using '+' or '-' button. Let the rice cook.
  6. Even though the cooking time is set to 8 minutes, it will take additional time for the pressure to reduce.
  7. When the pressure has reduced totally, the float valve pin on the top of the instant pot will drop down.
  8. Open the Instant Pot lid.
  9. Fluff the rice with fork, ladle or spoon.

Rice is now ready to eat with rasam, sambar, chutneys or any other curry.

Note :

For softer rice (Suitable for babies and children) : Use 3 cups of water for 1 cup of rice
